“Free cancellation” is doing a lot of quiet work in most hotel listings, and it rarely means what it sounds like at a glance. Here’s what to actually check before you book.
- The exact cutoff, not just “free cancellation.” 24 hours, 48 hours, and “by 6pm local time three days before” are three very different policies wearing the same badge.
- Local time zone versus your time zone. A cutoff at “midnight” almost always means the property’s local time, not yours — easy to miss when booking a hotel across the country or overseas.
- What happens to taxes and fees on a refund. Some cancellation policies refund the room rate but not resort fees or booking-site service charges.
- Whether the rate itself is refundable at all. Basic/non-refundable rates are usually cheaper for a reason, and “free cancellation” language sometimes only applies to a different, pricier rate tier on the same listing.
- Whether it’s the hotel’s policy or the booking site’s. Third-party booking sites can apply their own cancellation terms on top of the hotel’s actual policy — booking directly sometimes gets you more flexibility, sometimes less.
Reading the actual policy text, not just the green “free cancellation” badge, takes about thirty extra seconds and avoids a genuinely unpleasant surprise if plans change.
